Key facts

  • Rhyl's pass rate was 56.9% in 2025/26 from 4,011 tests, 6.9 points above the national average of 50.0%.
  • That puts it 8 of 21 centres in Wales (Wales average 52.4%), a mid-table pass rates in the region, 4.5 points above it.
  • Since 2021/22 the pass rate has risen by 4.4 points, from 52.5% to 56.9%.
  • On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 6 weeks since booking (shorter than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 19 weeks ahead.
  • A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 12.7 weeks, so waits have shortened by about 6.7 weeks.

Rhyl tests in Wales, where 20 mph has been the default on restricted roads since September 2023, and the effect on this centre is stark. Seven in ten of the roads mapped within two and a half kilometres of Victoria Road carry a 20 limit. Most of a Rhyl test is therefore spent at a speed that leaves very little room for error, on roads straight enough to make creeping up easy. There is almost nothing in the way of roundabouts to break it up: one of the practice loops on this page has none at all, and takes in sixteen right turns and fifteen left turns in under eight kilometres. The pass rate is well above the national average and the wait is shorter than the national median.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.

Rhyl gives you turns instead of roundabouts. One named roundabout sits in the area, on Ffordd Elan, and there are three mini-roundabouts within two and a half kilometres of the centre. Where another town would use a roundabout, Rhyl uses a give-way and a right turn, and the loops on this page show it. One is seven and a half kilometres long with no roundabout at all, sixteen right turns and fifteen left.

Ffordd Las, Ffordd Wellington and Ffordd Derwen run through the newer estates, and Cefndy Road, Marsh Road and Kingsley Avenue link them to the older streets. Nearly all of that is 20 mph. The discipline it asks for is holding a low speed on a straight road for minutes at a time without letting it drift up, which is harder than it sounds.

West Parade and East Parade run along the seafront. They are exposed, they change character completely between a wet Tuesday in February and a busy Saturday, and pedestrians step off the kerb without much warning.

Beyond the town the A525 and A547 provide the faster driving, including dual carriageway, and this is where the test changes gear. There is a level crossing in the area as well. The routine there is simple and worth having automatic: approach expecting to stop, and never move onto the crossing until the road beyond it is clear.

Manoeuvres are usually set on the quieter residential streets, around Brighton Road, Vale Road and Bath Street, where the kerbs are straight and parking is heavy enough on one side for a pull-up on the right to be worth doing properly.

Test day at Rhyl

The centre is on Victoria Road, a few minutes' walk from Rhyl station, which is roughly four hundred metres away. That is close enough to make arriving by train realistic, and it takes the parking problem away entirely.

DVSA publishes that you can access this centre if you use a wheelchair. The record lists car tests, motorcycle module 2 on the road, and ADI parts 2 and 3. Module 1, the off-road manoeuvring test, is not done here.

Candidate parking is not published for Rhyl. On a street of this kind, instructors typically drop candidates at the door and find a space nearby rather than counting on one outside, so leave time for that if you are driving yourself in.

Waits at Rhyl have come down a long way over the past year, and about a fifth of the slots in the booking window were still unbooked in July 2026. That usually means a cancellation or an earlier date is worth checking for. Moving a test or booking one goes through GOV.UK and nowhere else.

The examiner will check your licence, ask you to sign the insurance declaration and do the eyesight check outside before you get into the car. That means reading a plate at the kerb on Victoria Road.
