Key facts
- Pitlochry's pass rate was 73.3% in 2025/26 from 146 tests, 23.3 points above the national average of 50.0%.
- That puts it 1 of 67 centres in Scotland (Scotland average 49.3%), one of the higher pass rates in the region, 24 points above it.
- Since 2019/20 the pass rate has fallen by 8.2 points, from 81.5% to 73.3%.
- On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 18.1 weeks since booking (longer than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 7.6 weeks ahead.
- 57.1% of the standard slots in the booking window were still unbooked in August 2026, which usually means a cancellation or new date is realistic here.
Pitlochry has the highest pass rate of any test centre in Britain: 73.3 per cent, first of the 302 ranked and 24 points above the Scottish average. Read that with the size in mind — 146 tests in the year — and with the roads in mind too. Forty-nine per cent of the distance on the practice loops on this page is at 60 mph and 37 per cent at 30, with two give-way junctions and three sets of traffic signals in 52.9 kilometres. There is one school in the whole area. Two things to check before you travel: the centre is running from the fire station on Atholl Road while it is temporarily relocated, and the wait is 18.1 weeks.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.
Half the test is open road. Forty-nine per cent of the distance is at 60 mph, 37 per cent at 30, 7 per cent at 20 and 6 per cent at 40, on hill roads that climb, fall and bend without much warning. Making steady progress on those without hurrying a corner is the main thing being marked, and the common fault is the quiet one: sitting at 40 on a clear 60 stretch because the road looks narrower than it is.
There is very little to help you at junctions. Two give-way junctions, three sets of traffic signals, two mini-roundabouts and three signalled crossings across 52.9 kilometres, with no named roundabout anywhere. Two level crossings sit on the set, so practise stopping properly at a closed barrier before the day rather than meeting one for the first time under test.
The turning is lopsided. An 11 kilometre loop asks for ten right turns and three left; a 9.9 kilometre loop asks for ten and five. Right turns off a 60 road, across traffic, with a hedge shortening your view, are a different proposition from right turns in a town.
Atholl Road, Bridge Road, West Moulin Road, Bonnethill Road, Perth Road, Kirkmichael Road, Edradour Road, Baledmund Road and General Wade's Military Road carry the driving. There is one school in the area, no A-road on the loops and no dual carriageway.

Test day at Pitlochry
Check the address on your confirmation. DVSA has temporarily relocated this centre until further notice, and all tests are being taken from Pitlochry Fire Station, 16 Atholl Road, PH16 5BX. An older listing may send you somewhere else in the town.
Car tests only are conducted here. GOV.UK states that you can access this test centre if you use a wheelchair.
Pitlochry station is 0.3 kilometres away, close enough to walk in a few minutes, so arriving by train is realistic if your instructor meets you.
Parking is not published for this site, and a fire station needs its approaches clear at all times. Leave the car well away from the doors, on a nearby street, and walk in.
The wait was a median of 18.1 weeks for tests taken in July 2026, against a national 11.9. But the first week with a tenth of its slots still free was only 10.3 weeks ahead — a good deal sooner than the median — so it is worth checking repeatedly rather than accepting the first date you are shown.
Aberfeldy is 12.6 kilometres away, passes 68.5 per cent and was waiting 20.3 weeks. Perth (Arran Road) is 35.8 kilometres off at 48.8 per cent and 12.9 weeks — sooner, and a much harder test. Booking and cancelling is on GOV.UK only.
