Key facts

  • Llanelli's pass rate was 51% in 2025/26 from 4,380 tests, in line with the national average of 50.0%.
  • That puts it 15 of 21 centres in Wales (Wales average 52.4%), one of the lower pass rates in the region.
  • The rate has been stable since 2021/22, moving between 50.8% (2021/22) and 54.2% (2023/24).
  • Male candidates passed at 48.9% and female candidates at 53.5%, a gap of 4.6 points.
  • On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 5.4 weeks since booking (shorter than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 7.2 weeks ahead.
  • A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 12.5 weeks, so waits have shortened by about 7.1 weeks.

Llanelli is a 20 mph town. Two thirds of the roads inside the area the routes cover are at 20, higher than almost anywhere in Britain and a consequence of the Welsh default limit, so the drive is slow, close-quartered and full of small decisions. The centre is at Toft Place in Llanerch, north of the town centre. Pass rates run at about 51 per cent, in line with the national figure but below most of Wales, which makes this one of the harder Welsh centres relative to its neighbours. The compensation is availability: the median wait in mid-2026 was a little over five weeks, among the shortest anywhere in the country.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.

Twenty-seven mini-roundabouts sit inside the area the loops cover. That is an unusual number for a town this size, and it is the single fact that shapes a Llanelli test: you will meet several, probably in sequence, and they are where the marks go.

Four things come up on nearly every route:

  • the mini-roundabouts, where signalling the exit and keeping off the painted circle are what the examiner is watching;
  • the larger roundabouts round the edge of town, among them Trostre, Sandy, Morfa, Lliedi, Seaside and Penclacwydd, which are busier and carry retail traffic;
  • the 20 mph streets, which are two thirds of the network here and where speed drifts up without you noticing;
  • the A484 and A4138, which carry through traffic and include dual carriageway, and where the drop back to 20 has to be finished before the sign.

Beyond that, the practice loops on this page run about 51 kilometres over five routes and take in Corporation Avenue, Felinfoel Road, Trostre Road, Penyfan Road and Coedcae Road. There are two level crossings in the area and twenty-three schools, so the middle of the afternoon brings a school run and a fair chance of barriers.

The turns are relentless. Each loop carries between nine and sixteen right turns and up to nineteen left turns. This is not a test you can coast through. It is a test of concentration held over half an hour of constant small judgements.

Test day at Llanelli

The centre is at Toft Place, on the Llanerch side of town, and GOV.UK lists car tests and ADI part 3 only, with no motorcycle, lorry or bus testing. It also confirms that you can get into the building if you use a wheelchair.

Llanelli station is about a mile away, at the other end of town, so the train is possible but not convenient and most candidates arrive with an instructor. Parking is not published. At a unit on a small street like this the spaces immediately outside fill with test cars before each slot, and the usual practice is either to arrive early enough to take one or to be dropped at the door.

The examiner will call you by name, check your licence and the insurance, and the eyesight check is done outside on a parked plate. Bear in mind that every sign you read on the drive is bilingual. If you are travelling in from over the border, spend a little time getting used to that before the day rather than during it.

Booking, moving and cancelling a test is done on GOV.UK and nowhere else.
