Key facts
- Carmarthen's pass rate was 54.2% in 2025/26 from 2,746 tests, 4.2 points above the national average of 50.0%.
- That puts it 10 of 21 centres in Wales (Wales average 52.4%), a mid-table pass rates in the region, 1.8 points above it.
- Since 2021/22 the pass rate has fallen by 3.1 points, from 57.3% to 54.2%.
- On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 9.7 weeks since booking (shorter than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 12.6 weeks ahead.
Carmarthen is now largely a 20 mph town. Close to three quarters of the roads within a mile and a half of the test centre carry that limit, and it changes what the test is about. Faults here come from creeping over 20 on a downhill straight, or from sitting at 15 when the limit has gone back up, rather than from speed judgement on fast roads. The centre is in Ty Myrddin on Old Station Road, a few minutes from the railway station, and routes climb almost at once: Penlan Road, Castle Hill and Priory Street all rise out of the town centre. The A484 and the A4242 provide the one fast section, including a short dual carriageway stretch, so most routes have a single clear change of pace in them.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.
Three things come up on nearly every Carmarthen route: hills, mini-roundabouts and the 20 limit. There are twelve mini-roundabouts within a mile and a half of the centre and only one conventional roundabout of any size, on Heol Llangynnwr across the river. Mini-roundabouts are where candidates lose marks. They arrive too quickly at something that looks like a painted circle rather than a junction, and they forget to signal the exit.
The hills are the second thing. Penlan Road, Castle Hill and Richmond Terrace all climb out of the town centre, so a hill start or an uphill emerge is likely on any route. Practise holding the car on the clutch rather than the handbrake alone, and practise moving off uphill behind a queue that is stopping and starting.
The fast part of the test is short. The A484 and A4242 carry traffic around the town, with a dual carriageway section where the limit rises and a merge that has to be taken at the speed of the traffic already there. Coracle Way runs beside the river and links the two sides of the town, and Morfa Lane and Wellfield Road feed the residential streets where manoeuvres are usually set. Twelve schools sit within the same radius, enough that an afternoon slot can meet the end of the school day on Penlan Road or Blue Street. The practice loops on this page are 9.1 to 12.7 km.

Test day at Carmarthen
The centre is in Ty Myrddin, part of the Crown Building on Old Station Road, a short walk from Carmarthen station. Government office buildings of this kind usually have a car park with limited visitor space, and that is the pattern to plan for here; instructors commonly drop candidates at the door and park nearby. Arrive with enough time to walk in rather than pull up at the last minute.
DVSA lists car tests only at this centre. Its record also states that you cannot access the building if you use a wheelchair, so if you have an access need, settle it with DVSA when you book instead of finding out on the day.
The routine inside is the standard one: licence checked, the insurance and residency declaration signed, then out to the car with the examiner, with the eyesight check done outside before you set off. One point worth knowing about booking here. Around a third of the standard slots in the booking window were still free this summer, which is high, so if your date is further out than you want, watching for a cancellation is worth the effort at Carmarthen in a way it is not everywhere.
