Key facts

  • Huntly's pass rate was 63.7% in 2025/26 from 245 tests, 13.7 points above the national average of 50.0%.
  • That puts it 20 of 67 centres in Scotland (Scotland average 49.3%), one of the higher pass rates in the region, 14.4 points above it.
  • Since 2021/22 the pass rate has risen by 2.4 points, from 61.3% to 63.7%.
  • On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 13.3 weeks since booking; the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 24 weeks ahead.
  • A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 15.6 weeks, so waits have shortened by about 2.3 weeks.

Huntly is one of the smallest centres in the country, at around 245 car tests a year, and it has no traffic lights at all. Not one set stands within a mile and a half of the centre, so every junction on every route is a give way, a stop line or a roundabout read on your own judgement. The pass rate is high, 63.7 per cent, and the wait is shorter than most of Scotland. Two things to know before you book. This is a remote centre, listed at the fire station on Depot Road, and since August 2025 it has been running from a temporary site elsewhere in the town. Take the address from your confirmation.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.

Two roads name themselves over and over. Deveron Road carries the named stretch on two of the five practice loops on this page, Bogie Street on two more and Burnside Road on the fifth. That is how small the network is: 55.6 kilometres of practice, cut into loops of nine to twelve kilometres, over the same handful of streets.

The speed split is unusually clean. Fifty-six per cent of the roads around the centre are 30 mph and the other forty-four are 60, with almost nothing in between. So the test is town driving and then open single-carriageway road, swapped between without much warning — Castle Street, Duke Street, The Square, East Park Street, Park Street North and Farquhar Road for the first, the A920 and the A97 for the second. The national speed limit sign on the way out of town is where marks go, and as often for sitting well under the limit as for going over it.

Turning is the other thing the loops are built on. One asks for twelve right turns in 11.9 kilometres and another eleven in 12.1; the shortest, at nine kilometres, asks for only three. Just one of the five carries a roundabout anywhere on it. With no traffic lights in the town, nothing sequences any of that for you — you read the gap and go, at every junction, all the way round.

Riverside Drive, Marquis Drive, New Road and Bridge of Gibston fill in the quieter half, where the manoeuvres tend to go. There are no level crossings, and two schools sit inside the area.

Test day at Huntly

The permanent address is Huntly Fire Station on Depot Road, but that is not where car tests have been taken since 8 August 2025. DVSA moved the centre to a temporary site at the Linden Community Centre on Castle Street, AB54 4SH, until further notice, so an older listing will send you to the wrong end of town. Take the address from your booking confirmation, and ring DVSA if there is any doubt.

Only car tests are conducted here. DVSA states that it will make arrangements at this centre for candidates with a disability, which means telling them when you book rather than arriving and hoping.

Huntly station is a little over a kilometre away, though most candidates come with an instructor. Parking at a temporary site is not something DVSA publishes; treat the spaces at the community centre as belonging to the building's own users and leave the car on a nearby street.

The examiner will check your licence, take the insurance declaration, and do the eyesight check outside before you get in the car. Booking and cancelling is done on GOV.UK only.
