Key facts
- Colchester's pass rate was 50.6% in 2025/26 from 7,756 tests, in line with the national average of 50.0%.
- That puts it 13 of 24 centres in East of England (East of England average 51.4%), a mid-table pass rates in the region.
- Since 2021/22 the pass rate has risen by 4.4 points, from 46.2% to 50.6%.
- On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 12.4 weeks since booking; the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 23.6 weeks ahead.
- 21.8% of the standard slots in the booking window were still unbooked in August 2026, which usually means a cancellation or new date is realistic here.
Twenty-six mini-roundabouts sit inside a mile and a half of the test centre on Grange Way. That is the number to hold in your head before a Colchester test, because it changes what the examiner spends the hour watching. A mini-roundabout arrives quickly, it is often crossed rather than driven round, and each one packs a give way, a signal and a lane choice into the length of a car. The practice loops on this page run between 7.8 and 11.8 km and lean on Whitehall Road, Old Heath Road and the streets around Greenstead. The pass rate has climbed steadily since 2021 and now sits about level with the national average. Ipswich, less than thirty kilometres away, passes a good deal more.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.
The loops split into two kinds of driving. Three of the five lean on Whitehall Road, which carries the busier and faster part of the test. The other two work Old Heath Road and the streets off it, where the turns come thick and fast. One 11.6 km loop has a single roundabout on it and eight right turns and ten left.
Right turns are the theme at Colchester. Added up across the loops they outnumber roundabout entries by a wide margin, and a right turn out of a side road onto a busy through route is where hesitation and impatience both get marked. Mersea Road, Elmstead Road and Queen Elizabeth Way are among the through routes the loops use, and they are the sort of road you will be sitting and waiting to join.
Mini-roundabouts are everywhere in this part of town. Twenty-six sit within a mile and a half of the centre, more than one for every kilometre of the shortest loop. Take them as roundabouts rather than as paint. Signal for the exit, give way to the right, and keep the wheels off the circle if there is room to go round it.
Two level crossings sit in the area the loops cover. If your practice has not taken you over one, go and do it before the day, because the approach markings and the stopping position are much easier to get right the second time. Nineteen schools are inside the same area, so a mid-afternoon slot brings its own traffic with it. Manoeuvres are usually set on the quieter residential streets, which is typical rather than confirmed for any particular estate here.

Test day at Colchester
The centre is on Grange Way, with Hythe station about a mile away. That is walkable if you are early and the weather is on your side, but most candidates arrive with an instructor.
DVSA publishes that you can access this test centre if you use a wheelchair. It publishes nothing about candidate parking or the waiting room. Treat a space by the door as luck rather than a plan, and allow a few minutes to walk back from wherever you leave the car. That is what is typical for a centre of this size, not something confirmed for Grange Way.
Car tests are held here, along with ADI part 2 and ADI part 3. There are no motorcycle tests at Colchester. Booking, moving and cancelling a test is done only through GOV.UK.
Arrive about ten minutes before your slot. Much earlier and you spend the extra time waiting with other candidates, which does nothing for anybody's nerves. The examiner calls you by name, checks your licence and asks you to sign the declaration confirming the car is insured for the test. The eyesight check is done outside, reading a number plate at the roadside, before either of you gets in.
