Key facts
- Ipswich's pass rate was 62.3% in 2025/26 from 11,466 tests, 12.3 points above the national average of 50.0%.
- That puts it 1 of 24 centres in East of England (East of England average 51.4%), one of the higher pass rates in the region, 10.9 points above it.
- Since 2021/22 the pass rate has risen by 3.8 points, from 58.5% to 62.3%.
- On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 8 weeks since booking (shorter than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 22.8 weeks ahead.
- 21% of the standard slots in the booking window were still unbooked in August 2026, which usually means a cancellation or new date is realistic here.
Ipswich is one of the easiest places in England to pass a driving test. Its pass rate of 62.3 per cent runs 12.3 points above the national average, which puts it 33rd of 302 centres in the country and first of the 24 in the East of England. The wait is short as well, a median of eight weeks against a national figure closer to twelve, and the rate has been climbing rather than slipping.
Some of that is geography. The centre sits on Wentworth Road in Ransomes Europark, a business park on the south-eastern edge of town, and the roads around it are wide, modern and lightly used compared with an urban centre.
What those roads are full of is roundabouts. A test here turns on roundabouts more than on anything else, and learners who have practised mainly in traffic often find the balance unfamiliar.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.
Almost everything here comes back to roundabouts. The practice loops on this page cover 50 km between them, and one 12.1 km loop alone takes in fourteen roundabouts against eight right turns and nine left. On four of the five loops the roundabouts outnumber the turns, which is the reverse of what a town-centre test looks like.
The named roundabouts in the area around the centre give a sense of the range:
- Nacton Interchange and St Augustine's Roundabout, the two large ones
- Central Avenue and Ransomes Europark, on the business park itself
- The Havens, Ravenswood Avenue, Alnesbourn Crescent and Augusta Close, in the residential streets nearby
Those are junctions within two and a half kilometres of the centre rather than a list of what you will meet on the day. The mix is the useful part: a few big multi-lane roundabouts and a great many small ones. Choosing the lane on approach, then holding it the whole way round, is what gets marked.
Speeds spread wider than at most centres. Of the roads within that radius that carry a limit, just over half are 30 mph, 14 per cent are 40, a tenth are 60 and a few are 70. A route here can put a national speed limit road and a quiet 20 into the same forty minutes, so the adjustment between them matters more than any single manoeuvre.
Felixstowe Road, Ransomes Way, Central Avenue, Bluestem Road and Wentworth Road carry most of the driving, with Bucklesham Road and Ipswich Road appearing on the longer loops. There is a level crossing in the area and only six schools, so the school run barely registers here.

Test day at Ipswich
Ransomes Europark is a working business park, so the approach feels industrial rather than residential: wide access roads, lorries turning into yards, and unit numbers instead of shopfronts. Allow time to find the right one on a first visit.
Parking is on site and two independent listings agree on that. What they do not agree on is how much of it candidates can use, with at least one describing the bays as shared with staff. Arriving a little early rather than a lot early is the sensible approach at a centre of this kind.
Toilets are confirmed by two independent sources. Accessible facilities are mentioned as well, but the descriptions differ on how complete they are, so ring the centre first if you need to be certain.
This is a multi-purpose centre. Alongside car tests it runs motorcycle module 1 and module 2, lorry and bus tests, and ADI part 2 and part 3. The practical effect is that the site is busier than a car-only centre and the vehicles moving around the yard are considerably bigger than yours. Booking, moving and cancelling a test is done through GOV.UK only.
August and April have historically been the strongest months at Ipswich, January and February the weakest, though every month here sits well above the national average.

What examiners mark most often
DVSA does not publish faults by centre, but it does publish them nationally. These collected the most marks across every car test in Great Britain in 2025/26, and they are the same ones you will be marked on at Ipswich.
