Canterbury tests inside a ring road. The centre sits on New Dover Road, a few minutes from the one-way system that circles the old city, and most routes are on it within the first two minutes of the drive. Upper Bridge Street, Rhodaus Town and St Peter's Place carry multi-lane traffic in one direction only, so lane choice and early positioning matter more here than at most Kent centres. Away from the ring road the test drops into residential streets — about 40 per cent of the roads within a mile and a half of the centre are 20 mph — and into the estates off Chaucer Road, where the manoeuvres are usually set. The pass rate is one of the lower ones in the South East and has been drifting down for four years.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.
Two things shape a Canterbury test: the ring road and the mini-roundabouts. There are 23 mini-roundabouts within a mile and a half of the centre and only 16 signalled junctions, so the usual question at a junction here is give-way priority rather than a red light. Mini-roundabouts are where the marks go — signalling the exit in time, and steering round the painted circle rather than over it.
The ring road section uses Rhodaus Town, Upper Bridge Street, Lower Bridge Street and Military Road, one-way and more than one lane for most of its length. A turn off it can come with little warning, so you need to be in the right lane before the junction is in sight. Wincheap and Old Dover Road bring traffic in on the west and south sides and both queue at peak times. Kingsmead Road, Sturry Road and Chaucer Road hold the larger roundabouts on the north and east.
Beyond that the loops go out to the estates. About 40 per cent of the road length nearby is 20 mph, and 33 schools sit within the same radius, which means school-run traffic at the times many tests start and finish. Five level crossings are inside that radius too, and a closed barrier can hold a route for a couple of minutes. The practice loops on this page run from 8.7 to 12.4 km, one of them taking in 13 roundabouts.

Test day at Canterbury
The centre is at 25 New Dover Road, on the south-east side of the city and roughly a ten-minute walk from Canterbury East station. It is an office unit rather than a purpose-built site. Parking for candidates is limited in the way it usually is at centres of this kind, so instructors tend to drop candidates at the door and find a space on a side road; if you are driving yourself in, allow time for the same.
DVSA lists car tests only here, so there are no motorcycle or instructor tests sharing the site. Its record for Canterbury also states that you cannot access the centre if you use a wheelchair. If you have any access need at all, take it up with DVSA before the day rather than on the morning.
Inside, the examiner calls you by name, checks your licence and asks you to sign the insurance and residency declaration before you walk out together. The eyesight check is done outside on New Dover Road, reading a number plate at distance. The drive then starts with a move-off into traffic on that same road, which is busy for most of the working day. The first mirror and shoulder check of the test is the one that catches people out.
