The Boulevard and Margate Road do the heavy lifting at the start and end of every loop. Between them they carry most of the roundabouts on the practice loops on this page, serving the business parks and the retail traffic off the A299 Thanet Way. They are wide and well signed, but they come so close together that a candidate who takes one badly is still recovering when the next arrives. Getting the speed down early and reading the road markings from a distance is the habit that pays here.
The Thanet Way itself is the fastest part of the test. Joining a dual carriageway from a slip road, holding a lane while traffic overtakes on both sides, and leaving in good time are all assessed, and the merge is where nerves show up as either hesitation or a lane change made too late.
Then the loops go inland or into the town, and the driving changes completely. Reculver Road, Sweechbridge Road, Ford Hill and Heart in Hand Road are country roads with blind bends, no pavement and mud on the surface after rain. The national limit applies on some of them, which does not mean it is safe to drive at it. Examiners mark for driving too fast for the conditions as readily as for driving too slowly.
In the town, Mickleburgh Hill, Broomfield Road, King's Road and King Edward Avenue bring parked cars, pedestrians and a gradient down towards the sea. Manoeuvres are usually asked for on the quieter residential streets around Richmond Drive and Woodrow Chase. If you practise one transition, make it the country lane back onto the Thanet Way.

Test day at Herne Bay
The centre is in the Altria Business Park off Margate Road, right where it meets the Thanet Way. It is a unit on a modern estate rather than a high-street building, and the roads inside the park have their own roundabouts, so the first turn of the wheel and the last one both involve giving way.
Candidate parking is in marked bays on site, and toilets are available inside. If you have a disability or need any adjustment on the day, tell DVSA when you book so the arrangement is made in advance.
This is a multi-purpose centre. As well as car tests it runs motorcycle module 1 and module 2 and ADI part 2 and part 3, so you may see riders using the manoeuvring area while you wait.
Herne Bay railway station is about two kilometres away, a walk of roughly half an hour, so most candidates arrive by car. Tests are booked, moved and cancelled through GOV.UK only.
The examiner checks the licence, takes the insurance declaration and does the eyesight check outside. Expect the drive to begin on the business park roads and be on a main road within a minute.
