Key facts
- Cambridge's pass rate was 53.8% in 2025/26 from 13,689 tests, 3.8 points above the national average of 50.0%.
- That puts it 6 of 24 centres in East of England (East of England average 51.4%), one of the higher pass rates in the region, 2.4 points above it.
- Since 2021/22 the pass rate has risen by 5.7 points, from 48.1% to 53.8%.
- Male candidates passed at 55.5% and female candidates at 51.9%, a gap of 3.6 points.
- On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 20.1 weeks since booking (longer than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 19.8 weeks ahead.
- A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 15.7 weeks, so waits have grown by about 4.4 weeks.
The wait is the first thing to deal with at Cambridge. Candidates tested in July had waited a median of twenty weeks since booking, close to twice the national figure, and the booking window was full for six months ahead. Book early and treat the date you get as fixed. What you are booking is a slow, dense test. Fifty-seven per cent of the tagged roads within two and a half kilometres of Brookmount Court are 20 mph, there are 72 signalled junctions and 20 mini-roundabouts in that radius, and the practice loops on this page are made almost entirely of turns. The centre sits on Kirkwood Road off Kings Hedges Road, in the north of the city with the science park on one side.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.
Cambridge is a 20 mph city and the test reflects it. Fifty-seven per cent of the tagged roads within two and a half kilometres of the centre are 20, another third are 30, and what is left at higher limits is a thin slice of faster road at the edge of the area. Nothing here is quick and everything is close together.
Milton Road and Kings Hedges Road carry most of the main road driving and the loops use them repeatedly. Around them, the residential streets off Northfield Avenue and Kilmaine Close supply the manoeuvre ground: 20 mph, cars parked along one side, and just enough width to reverse without blocking the road.
Four named roundabouts sit in the area, among them Four Lamps Roundabout and the one at Cambridge Science Park, with 20 mini-roundabouts and 72 signalled junctions in the same radius. Each of the practice loops on this page takes in two to four roundabouts and between eight and thirteen right turns, which works out as a turn every few hundred metres for the whole drive.
Two local features are worth naming. The guided busway crosses the area, and where it meets a road the layout is not what a driver meets anywhere else. The other is the level crossing. Neither is on every loop, but both produce serious faults from candidates meeting them for the first time under test conditions. Meet them in a lesson first.
The failure mode at Cambridge is not a difficult junction. It is observation and speed drifting over a long, slow, crowded drive in which the next hazard is always a few seconds away.

Test day at Cambridge
The centre is Units A and B, Brookmount Court, on Kirkwood Road, a small courtyard of units off Kings Hedges Road in the north of Cambridge. The units are lettered rather than numbered, so follow the court in rather than expecting a sign on the road.
DVSA runs car tests and ADI parts 2 and 3 here. The record says DVSA will make arrangements for candidates who have a disability, which is not the same as a statement that the building is step-free. If you need step-free access, ring the centre and ask before the day.
Parking and waiting facilities are not published. A courtyard unit of this kind normally has a handful of bays shared with the other occupiers, so treat that as typical, and arrive with a few minutes in hand rather than counting on a space being free.
Cambridge North station is a little under two kilometres away, and the guided busway runs through the area, which will matter more once you are driving than it does on the way in.
The wait here is long, so if your plans change, move the test rather than cancelling it, and keep checking for cancellations in the meantime. Booking, moving and cancelling is done only through GOV.UK.

Other tests at Cambridge
This centre is not car only. DVSA publishes results for these categories separately, and they are taken by different candidates on different vehicles, so the rates are not comparable with the car figure above.

What examiners mark most often
DVSA does not publish faults by centre, but it does publish them nationally. These collected the most marks across every car test in Great Britain in 2025/26, and they are the same ones you will be marked on at Cambridge.
