If you are testing at Bury St Edmunds, the nearest alternative is Cambridge, nearly 40 km away. That matters, because Bury is one of the harder centres in the East of England: 46.2 per cent last year, four points under the national average and 21st of the 24 centres in the region. The trend is at least the right way, up seven points in four years.
What makes the drive hard is not speed or traffic but junctions. The town is ringed by roads that meet at roundabout after roundabout, and the practice loops on this page average eight or nine of them in a ten-kilometre lap. Candidates who are comfortable in the town centre still fail on the ring.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.
Bury's ring is the test. Parkway South, Western Way and Compiegne Way loop around the old town, and every loop on this page uses part of them. Between the ring and the roads coming off it there are 15 mini-roundabouts in the area, plus the two large conventional ones at Drovers Corner and Sicklesmere Road. Traffic lights, by contrast, are scarce: 20 sets in the whole area. Almost every decision you make here is a give-way decision, taken at speed, with no red light to make it for you.
Three sequences account for most of the marks:
- Coming off the ring on to Tayfen Road or Newmarket Road, where the approach speed is higher than the junction wants.
- The mini-roundabouts on Beetons Way and Westley Road, taken one after another, where the signalling gets sloppy by the third.
- Out Westgate and Petticoat Lane into the older streets, narrow, parked both sides, and the place a meeting situation usually appears.
Speed limits are ordinary: 64 per cent of the roads around the centre are 30 mph, 16 per cent are 20. But 8 per cent sit at 70 and another 5 per cent at 60, on the country roads the longer loops touch on the way out towards Hollow Road. That contrast is the real difficulty here. You need to lift to 60 without hesitating, then come back down to 30 at the sign, several times in forty minutes.

Test day at Bury St Edmunds
Tritron House stands on St Andrews Street North, which also carries the town's bus and coach station. That is unusual and useful. Most candidates at a market town centre have no realistic way of getting there except by car, and here you have one.
DVSA publishes a specific instruction for this centre: the car park is not to be used for practice. Turning up early to run through a bay park before your slot is the one thing not to do. Arrive, park, go in.
On access, DVSA does not print the plain wheelchair statement it uses at most centres. Instead it says arrangements will be made for candidates with a disability, which means a phone call before the day rather than an assumption on it. Weekend testing is also not running at present.
Car tests and motorcycle module 2 are conducted here. There is no ADI testing and no off road motorcycle module.
The examiner checks your licence, asks you to sign the insurance declaration and does the eyesight check outside. Booking, moving and cancelling is done only through GOV.UK.
