Key facts

  • Poole's pass rate was 53.4% in 2025/26 from 10,375 tests, 3.4 points above the national average of 50.0%.
  • That puts it 9 of 21 centres in South West (South West average 51.7%), a mid-table pass rates in the region, 1.7 points above it.
  • The rate has been stable since 2021/22, moving between 47.7% (2023/24) and 54.1% (2021/22).
  • On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 7.1 weeks since booking (shorter than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 24 weeks ahead.
  • A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 11.6 weeks, so waits have shortened by about 4.5 weeks.
  • 26.3% of the standard slots in the booking window were still unbooked in August 2026, which usually means a cancellation or new date is realistic here.

Poole is one of the bigger multi-purpose sites on the south coast. DVSA runs car tests here, both motorcycle modules, lorry and bus tests, and ADI part 2 and part 3, which is a fuller range than most centres offer and means the yard on Harwell Road is not always quiet. The driving is roundabout driving. Eight named roundabouts ring the area, among them Tower Park, Darby's Corner, Dunyeats, Mannings Heath, Ashdown and Holes Bay North, with 16 mini-roundabouts mapped alongside them. Every one of the practice loops on this page takes in at least six. The pass rate sits a little above the national average and has been stable for years, and the wait is short by national standards, having come down by around eight weeks over the past year.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.

Poole is a roundabout test and there is no way round that. The loops each pass six or seven, the area holds eight named ones, and there are 16 mini-roundabouts on top. Several are large and multi-lane, so the approach lane you choose two hundred metres out decides the next thirty seconds.

Worth practising specifically before a Poole test:

  • Multi-lane roundabout entries taken from the correct lane, then held round to the exit without drifting across the line.
  • Roundabouts in series, where the exit of one becomes the approach to the next and there is no time to reset.
  • Mini-roundabouts on ordinary residential roads, signalled for the exit and driven round rather than over.
  • The drop from 40 back to 30 coming off the faster links, made before the sign.

Adastral Road, Nuffield Road and Hatch Pond Road carry the estate end of the driving, and Dorset Way, Canford Heath Road and Fleets Lane the faster links between the roundabouts. Around a fifth of the roads mapped within 2.5 km of the centre are 40 mph or higher, which is more open road than most town centres offer, and the changes of limit come quickly.

Waterloo Road and Dale Valley Road appear on the loops repeatedly. These are the older, narrower, busier roads where parked cars cut the working width and side turnings arrive sooner than expected. Manoeuvres are normally set on the quieter residential streets off them, where the kerb is straight and there is parking on one side.

There is also a level crossing in the area, so a barrier down is possible. The loops run between 10.4 and 12 kilometres.

Test day at Poole

The centre is at 4 to 20 Harwell Road on the Nuffield Industrial Estate, north of the town. Industrial estates all look alike from the road, so give yourself a few minutes to find the unit rather than the street.

DVSA publishes nothing about parking, the waiting room or accessibility for this centre. If you need step-free access or any other arrangement, ring the booking line before the day instead of relying on what you find when you get there. On parking, what is typical for an estate unit of this kind is that candidate spaces are limited and instructors park on the estate roads nearby, so plan for a short walk back.

Because the site handles lorry, bus and motorcycle tests as well as cars, it can be busier than a car-only centre, and the vehicles moving around it are larger. Take that into account when you arrive and when you move off.

Poole station is a couple of kilometres away, so most candidates come by car with an instructor. Arrive about ten minutes before your slot. The examiner checks your licence, asks you to sign the insurance declaration, and does the eyesight check outside before you get in. Booking and cancelling go through GOV.UK.

This centre is not car only. DVSA publishes results for these categories separately, and they are taken by different candidates on different vehicles, so the rates are not comparable with the car figure above.
