Key facts

  • Lowestoft's pass rate was 43.3% in 2025/26 from 7,603 tests, 6.7 points below the national average of 50.0%.
  • That puts it 23 of 24 centres in East of England (East of England average 51.4%), one of the lower pass rates in the region, 8.1 points below it.
  • The rate has been stable since 2021/22, moving between 43.3% (2025/26) and 48% (2023/24).
  • Male candidates passed at 41.9% and female candidates at 45.3%, a gap of 3.4 points.
  • On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 14.1 weeks since booking (longer than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 22.4 weeks ahead.
  • A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 5 weeks, so waits have grown by about 9.1 weeks.

Six level crossings sit within two and a half kilometres of the Lowestoft (Mobbs Way) centre. That is an unusual number to have on the doorstep, and it is the first thing to prepare for. The centre is at Oulton Broad, on the western side of the town, and the routes run out along Gorleston Road, Normanston Drive, Bridge Road and Hall Lane. Eight roads in ten tagged nearby are 30 mph, so the pace is steady rather than fast, with the A12 as the one dual carriageway. Named roundabouts are almost absent and mini-roundabouts do the work instead. The pass rate is well below the national average, and the wait has grown sharply, from about five weeks a year ago to around fourteen now.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.

Start with the level crossings. Six are tagged within two and a half kilometres of the centre, and they are the feature most likely to catch a candidate who has practised elsewhere. The rules are simple and the marking is strict: approach at a speed that leaves you able to stop, never move onto a crossing without a clear way off it, and if the lights start while you are waiting to go, you stay put.

The rest of the driving is steady. Around eight roads in ten tagged near the centre are 30 mph, so this is not a test that punishes you on speed the way a rural centre does. It punishes you on junctions. One practice loop on this page has thirteen right turns and twelve left in under nine kilometres, and the roads that carry them, Gorleston Road, Normanston Drive, Bridge Road and Somerleyton Road, have side turnings and parked cars in the way of the view.

Roundabouts here are mostly small. Only one named roundabout is tagged in the area, at Leisure Way, but ten mini-roundabouts are, and they are what appears on the loops, between one and nine of them depending on the route. Signal for the exit and go round the circle, not over it.

The A12 supplies the only dual carriageway, and Peto Way and Millennium Way carry the faster stretches. Seventeen schools sit in the same radius, so an afternoon slot puts you into the school run on exactly the residential roads where manoeuvres get asked for.

Test day at Lowestoft

The centre is a unit at the Oakland House Business Centre on Mobbs Way, at Oulton Broad on the western edge of Lowestoft. It is a shared business centre rather than a standalone DVSA building, so look for the unit once you are on the site instead of a sign from the road.

GOV.UK lists car tests, motorcycle module 2 on-road tests and ADI part 3 here. Nothing is published about wheelchair access or other arrangements, so if you need step-free entry or anything agreed in advance, ring the centre before your date.

Parking is not published either. Business centres of this kind normally have shared bays, shared with the other tenants, so arrive with time to find a space rather than counting on one by the door.

Oulton Broad North station is about a kilometre away, which is walkable, though most candidates come with an instructor.

Tests are booked, moved and cancelled through GOV.UK only. The wait has grown by around nine weeks in a year, so if you have a date, keep it and watch for cancellations rather than rebooking.

The examiner checks your licence, has you sign the insurance declaration and does the eyesight check outside before you get in the car.
