Key facts

  • Inveraray's pass rate was 69.4% in 2025/26 from 124 tests, 19.4 points above the national average of 50.0%.
  • That puts it 9 of 67 centres in Scotland (Scotland average 49.3%), one of the higher pass rates in the region, 20.1 points above it.
  • On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 20.9 weeks since booking (longer than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 12 weeks ahead.
  • A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 12.6 weeks, so waits have grown by about 8.3 weeks.
  • 25% of the standard slots in the booking window were still unbooked in August 2026, which usually means a cancellation or new date is realistic here.

Inveraray is one of the eleven best centres in Britain to sit a test at. It passed 69.4 per cent of candidates in 2025/26 from 124 tests, 19.4 points above the national average and ninth of the 67 centres in Scotland. The roads explain a good deal of it: 46 per cent of the distance on the practice loops on this page is at 60 mph and only 33 per cent at 30, with three give-way junctions, two sets of traffic signals and one school in the whole area. There is very little town to get wrong. The catch is getting a date — the wait is a median of 20.9 weeks, nearly double the national 11.9.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.

Nearly half the driving is at 60 mph. Forty-six per cent of the distance sits in the national limit, 33 per cent at 30 and 21 per cent at 40, on lochside and hill roads that bend continuously and change camber as they go. That is where the test is won or lost. Examiners here are looking for progress on the open road — not speed for its own sake, but a car that is up to the limit where the road allows it and slowing early where it does not.

There is almost nothing else to manage. Three give-way junctions and two sets of traffic signals across 43.2 kilometres. No roundabouts named anywhere in the area, no mini-roundabouts, no zebra or signalled crossings, no traffic calming and no level crossings. One school. For a town test this is about as bare as the road furniture gets in Britain.

The turning is even. A 10.2 kilometre loop asks for eight right turns and eight left, a 10 kilometre loop asks for eight and ten, and the shortest loop, at 6.2 kilometres, asks for eight and six. That last one is the busiest per kilometre, and it is the town section.

Front Street, Main Street, Church Square, Upper Avenue, Barn Brae, Barn Park, Queen's Drive, Dalmally Road and the Old Military Road carry most of the driving, along with Front Street East, Front Street West and Main Street South. There is no dual carriageway.

Test day at Inveraray

Tests are conducted from The Pier on Front Street, PA32 8UY, on the loch side at the front of the town. Car tests only. GOV.UK does not publish a wheelchair access note for this site, so ring DVSA and ask if that matters to you.

There is no railway station here and parking is not published for the centre. Front Street is the town's main frontage and it fills with visitors from spring through to autumn, so allow more time than the distance suggests and be ready to leave the car further back than you would like.

The wait was a median of 20.9 weeks for tests taken in July 2026, well beyond the national median of 11.9. The first week with a tenth of its slots still free was 21.8 weeks ahead, so the two figures agree with each other here — the diary really is that full, and a cancellation is the only thing that will move you forward.

Everything nearby is about half an hour away and all of it is different. Oban is 31.9 kilometres, passes 66.1 per cent and was waiting 15.4 weeks. Lochgilphead is 31 kilometres at 56.4 per cent and 14.3 weeks. Dunoon is 32.3 kilometres at 71.5 per cent but waiting 21.1 weeks. Booking and cancelling is on GOV.UK only.
