Gosforth is the test centre for the north of Newcastle, and it does not work like a town-centre one. It sits on Sandy Lane beside the racecourse, on a site shared with lorry, bus and trailer tests, so the vehicles parked around you on the morning may be a great deal larger than yours.
The driving matches the setting. Half the tagged roads within a couple of miles of the centre are 20 mph, but almost a tenth are 70, and the rest is spread across everything in between. That spread is the thing to prepare for. The practice loops on this page run north and east into Wideopen, Burradon and Dudley, using the Great North Road to move between them, and the limit changes repeatedly along the way.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.
The Great North Road is the spine of nearly every route. It is wide and fast, with roundabouts strung along it, and the skill it tests is lane choice made early. Getting into the correct lane well before the junction rather than at the give-way line is the biggest single difference between a comfortable Gosforth test and an uncomfortable one.
The roundabouts around this centre have names your instructor will use. Moor Farm and Seaton Burn are the large ones, with Dudley Lane Interchange, The Crossways, West Moor and Great Parkway filling in around them. Across the five practice loops on this page there are ten roundabout manoeuvres, which is not a heavy count, but almost all of them sit on higher-speed roads where the approach has to be judged rather than crawled.
Between those the loops drop into the estates. Havannah Drive, Stonecrop Drive, Canterbury Way and Ascot Drive are the sort of streets where the reversing manoeuvres are set, quiet enough that a bay park is not fighting traffic. Dudley Lane, Stalks Road, Coach Lane and Great Lime Road are the connectors, narrower and more rural in feel, with hedges and bends that shorten what you can see.
Right turns outnumber left turns on these loops by roughly three to two. That shape matters, because a right turn from a fast road means judging an oncoming gap while holding position, and it is the manoeuvre this centre asks for most often. Practise it on the Great North Road specifically, not on a quiet estate street where the gap comes to you.

Test day at Gosforth
The centre is on Sandy Lane, north of the racecourse, in a yard rather than a shop unit. Parking for candidates is on site but the bays are limited and shared with the large vehicles that also test here, so arrive close to your slot rather than early and let your instructor pick the space. Male, female and accessible toilets are provided, and there is step-free access into the building.
Sandy Lane itself narrows where trailers and vans are parked on the industrial side, which is typical of this kind of estate road. Treat the first stretch of the test as a real hazard rather than a warm-up, because a parked vehicle can reduce it to a single working lane and you may have to give way to something coming the other way before you have properly settled.
Public transport does not reach the door and the Metro network stops short of it, so nearly all candidates arrive by car or with an instructor.
Waits here run longer than the national median and have grown over the past year, so book early and keep watching for cancellations rather than assuming a date will appear. Booking, moving and cancelling is done only through GOV.UK.
