Key facts
- Gateshead's pass rate was 37.5% in 2025/26 from 9,512 tests, 12.5 points below the national average of 50.0%.
- That puts it 11 of 11 centres in North East (North East average 48.4%), one of the lower pass rates in the region, 10.9 points below it.
- Since 2021/22 the pass rate has fallen by 6.6 points, from 44.1% to 37.5%.
- On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 7.1 weeks since booking (shorter than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 21.4 weeks ahead.
- A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 9.1 weeks, so waits have shortened by about 2 weeks.
- 21% of the standard slots in the booking window were still unbooked in August 2026, which usually means a cancellation or new date is realistic here.
Gateshead has the lowest pass rate of the 11 test centres in the North East and sits 298th of the 302 in Great Britain. Fewer than two candidates in five pass first time. The wait is short by national standards and has come down over the past year, which is why the centre stays busy.
The reason for the difficulty is on the map. The centre is on Waterside Drive at Dunston, a few hundred metres from the MetroCentre, so routes pick up retail and river traffic straight away. Around 40 per cent of the roads near the centre are 20 mph and another third are 30, yet there is dual carriageway within reach as well. A Gateshead test can move from a calmed residential street to national speed limit driving in a couple of minutes.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.
Two things dominate here: mini-roundabouts and traffic lights. There are 19 mini-roundabouts and 59 signalled junctions in the streets around the centre, a controlled decision every few hundred metres. The practice loops on this page carry that through, with eight roundabouts on the 11.0 km loop and seven on the 13.9 km one. Gibside Way and Delta Bank Road are the only conventional islands nearby. The rest are minis, and minis are where marks go: signal for the exit, take a proper look at all three approaches, and do not drive across the painted circle.
The speed profile is unusually split. About 40 per cent of the mapped roads are 20 mph and a third are 30, but around a tenth are 50 and a similar share is 70. Riverside Way, Handy Drive and Mandela Way carry the faster, wider driving near the MetroCentre; St Omers Road, Dunston Road, Scotswood View and the streets off them carry the slow half. Joining at speed, holding a lane, then losing that speed again before the limit drops is the sequence that catches candidates who have only practised in town.
Thirty-five schools sit inside the area the loops cover, one of the higher counts anywhere, so an afternoon slot brings school-run traffic, parked cars and children crossing between them. There is also one level crossing in the area, worth driving over once before the day so the approach and the markings are familiar.
Manoeuvres are usually set around Oak Avenue, King George Avenue and Wellington Road rather than on the through routes. Those streets give straight kerbs and enough parked cars to make a pull-up on the right worth doing properly.

Test day at Gateshead
The centre is on Waterside Drive at Dunston, close enough to MetroCentre station that arriving by train or Metro and walking the last part is realistic. Most candidates still come with an instructor.
DVSA publishes that you can access this centre if you use a wheelchair. It publishes nothing about candidate parking. Treat a space outside as a bonus rather than a plan, and allow a few minutes to walk back from wherever you leave the car, particularly at times when the MetroCentre is busy. That is what is typical of a centre in this kind of location, not something confirmed for Waterside Drive.
Car tests are held here, along with motorcycle module 1 off-road, motorcycle module 2 on-road, ADI part 2 and ADI part 3. Tests are booked, moved and cancelled through GOV.UK and nowhere else.
Ten minutes before your slot is early enough. Arrive much sooner and you spend the extra time waiting with other candidates, which helps nobody. The examiner calls you by name, checks your licence and asks you to sign the declaration confirming the car is insured for the test. The eyesight check is done outside at the roadside, reading a number plate, before either of you gets in.

What examiners mark most often
DVSA does not publish faults by centre, but it does publish them nationally. These collected the most marks across every car test in Great Britain in 2025/26, and they are the same ones you will be marked on at Gateshead.
