Key facts
- Dumfries's pass rate was 53.9% in 2025/26 from 2,267 tests, 3.9 points above the national average of 50.0%.
- That puts it 41 of 67 centres in Scotland (Scotland average 49.3%), a mid-table pass rates in the region, 4.6 points above it.
- The rate has been stable since 2020/21, moving between 47% (2024/25) and 53.9% (2025/26).
- Male candidates passed at 51.9% and female candidates at 56.6%, a gap of 4.7 points.
- On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 11.9 weeks since booking; the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 6 weeks ahead.
- A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 6.3 weeks, so waits have grown by about 5.6 weeks.
Dumfries tests are built around small roundabouts. Twenty-two mini-roundabouts are tagged within two and a half kilometres of the centre on Brooms Road, against twenty-three sets of traffic signals, so the junction you meet most often here is the one people practise least. The centre sits close to the town centre and the station, and the practice loops on this page run out along Lockerbie Road, Annan Road and Glasgow Road before coming back through the housing. Scotland has no blanket 20 mph default, so every 20 section is signed where it starts and there is no rule of thumb to fall back on. The pass rate is a few points above the national average and has held steady for several years. The wait has nearly doubled since last summer.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.
Three in five of the roads tagged within two and a half kilometres of the centre are 30 mph and just under a third are 20. That mix is the test in one line: most of the driving is at 30, with 20 sections signed at the point they begin. Because Scotland signs every limit individually, missing one of those signs is a straightforward speeding fault with no defence.
The rest of the profile is roundabouts. Twenty-two mini-roundabouts are tagged in the area, and the practice loops on this page pick up between two and seven roundabout entries each over loops of six to thirteen kilometres. Tinwald Downs, Bloomfield, Cuckoo Bridge and Brownrigg are the conventional ones towards the edges of town; the mini-roundabouts sit inside the built-up streets, often close together. Mini-roundabout technique is where marks go: give way to the right, signal the exit, and go round the painted circle rather than over it.
There is dual carriageway in the area and around an eighth of the roads are 60 mph, so a Dumfries route can move from a housing estate to national speed limit in a couple of minutes. Two level crossings sit inside the same radius. If one comes up, approach at a speed that lets you stop, and never move on without a clear exit ahead.
Seventeen schools are tagged in the area, which matters at the start and end of the school day more than at any other time.
Manoeuvres are usually asked for on the quieter residential roads off Gillbrae Road and Birchwood Drive, where the kerbs are straight and there is room to reverse.

Test day at Dumfries
The centre is at 161 Brooms Road, on the eastern side of the town centre and a little over half a kilometre from Dumfries station, which is close enough to walk. GOV.UK publishes that you can access this centre if you use a wheelchair. It runs car tests and motorcycle module 2 on the road, so there may be riders waiting alongside car candidates.
Parking is not published for this centre. Units of this kind usually have a few marked bays and space on the surrounding streets, which is typical rather than confirmed, so allow a few minutes to park and walk back rather than counting on a space at the door.
Arrive about ten minutes before your slot. The examiner calls you by name, checks your licence and asks you to sign the declaration that the car is insured for the test. The eyesight check is done outside, reading a number plate at the usual distance. The drive begins with a move-off into town traffic, and the first mini-roundabout comes early, so the settling-in period is shorter than most candidates would like.
Tests are booked, moved and cancelled through GOV.UK only.
