Seventy-four per cent of the distance on the practice loops on this page is at 60 mph. That is the highest share of open road at almost any centre, and everything else about Castle Douglas follows from it: no traffic signals on the set at all, no mini-roundabouts, four give-way junctions in 59.2 kilometres, and one 10.7 kilometre loop that asks for a single right turn. This is a test of holding a sensible speed on a country road, reading bends, and dealing with what comes the other way. It passes 53.4 per cent, 121st of the 302 centres ranked. The wait has doubled in a year, from 9 weeks to 18.1.

This is a country test. Seventy-four per cent of the 59.2 kilometres on the practice loops on this page is at 60 mph and the other 26 per cent at 30, with nothing at 20 and nothing at 40. There is no dual carriageway, so the 60 is single-carriageway road: bends you cannot see round, farm entrances, tractors, and oncoming traffic on your side of the crown of the road.
What that means for the marking is different from a town test. Speed itself is the fault examiners see most — not exceeding the limit, but sitting at 40 on a clear 60 road because it feels fast, and then arriving at a 30 sign still doing 45. Positioning on a bend and planning for what you cannot yet see are the other two.
Junctions are almost absent. Four give-way junctions, one signalled crossing, no traffic signals, no mini-roundabouts and no zebras across the whole set. Three roundabouts are named — Queen Street, Ernespie Road and the Castle Douglas Bypass — and one 10.7 kilometre loop carries five of them while asking for one right turn and two left in the entire distance.
King Street, Queen Street, St Andrew Street, Ernespie Road, Threave Road, Torrs Road, Blackpark Road and Jenny's Loaning carry the town half, with the B727 and B736 beyond it. There are only 3 schools in the area and no level crossings.

Test day at Castle Douglas
The centre is at Carlingwark Cottage in the Carlingwark Arc on Buchan Street, DG7 1TH. Car tests only are conducted here. DVSA will make arrangements for you at this test centre if you have a disability, which means saying so when you book rather than on the day.
No station is close enough to be useful, so everyone arrives by car or with an instructor.
Parking is not published for this site. Buchan Street is an ordinary town street; read the signs, and give yourself a few minutes rather than arriving on the hour.
The wait was a median of 18.1 weeks for tests taken in July 2026, against a national 11.9. That is the number that has changed most here — a year earlier the median was 9 weeks, so it has doubled. The first week with a tenth of its slots still free was 23 weeks ahead, which is longer than the median, so there is no easy cancellation to wait for.
February returned 62 per cent and July 44.9, though the monthly figures rest on fewer than a hundred tests each and move about accordingly. Dumfries is 26.4 kilometres away, passes 53.9 per cent and was waiting 11.9 weeks — the same pass rate for six weeks less. Booking and cancelling is on GOV.UK only.
