Key facts

  • Campbeltown's pass rate was 71.6% in 2025/26 from 109 tests, 21.6 points above the national average of 50.0%.
  • That puts it 4 of 67 centres in Scotland (Scotland average 49.3%), one of the higher pass rates in the region, 22.3 points above it.
  • The rate has been stable since 2018/19, moving between 60.4% (2023/24) and 74.1% (2021/22).
  • On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 26.9 weeks since booking (longer than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 24 weeks ahead.
  • A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 13.6 weeks, so waits have grown by about 13.3 weeks.
  • 83.3% of the standard slots in the booking window were still unbooked in August 2026, which usually means a cancellation or new date is realistic here.

Campbeltown is the fourth best centre in Britain by pass rate: 71.6 per cent in 2025/26 from 109 tests, 21.6 points above the national average and fourth of the 67 in Scotland. It has been that way for years, moving between 60.4 per cent in 2023/24 and 74.1 in 2021/22 without ever dropping near the average. The drive is almost entirely a town one — 95 per cent of the distance on the practice loops on this page is at 30 mph — but with 20 give-way junctions and not a single set of traffic signals, so you decide everything yourself. The wait is the hard part: a median of 26.9 weeks, up from 12.6 a year ago.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.

Twenty give-way junctions and no traffic signals at all. That single pair of numbers describes the test here better than anything else. Across 50.7 kilometres there is not one set of lights to tell you when to go, so every junction is yours to read: what you can see, what you cannot, and whether the gap is really a gap. Candidates who have learned to wait for a green find this harder than they expect.

Ninety-five per cent of the distance is at 30 mph and the remaining 5 per cent at 20, so speed is never the issue. There is one mini-roundabout and one piece of traffic calming, no zebra or signalled crossings and no level crossings. Three roundabouts are named in the area — Main Street, Kinloch Road and Hall Street — and every loop takes in two or three of them.

The turning leans right. A 12.3 kilometre loop asks for ten right turns and nine left, a 12 kilometre loop asks for nine and seven, and a 7.9 kilometre loop asks for nine and six. Only the shortest loop reverses that.

The A83 comes into the set, along with the B842 and B843 and a stretch of dual carriageway, which is the one place the road opens out and lane discipline is marked.

Main Street, Hall Street, Kinloch Road, George Street, Lorne Street, Witchburn Road, North Shore Street, Kilkerran Road, Millknowe Road, Tomaig Road, Hillside Road and Glengyle Road carry most of the driving, with High Askomil and Low Askomil Walk named on the loops. There are 3 schools in the area.

Test day at Campbeltown

Tests are conducted from Crown Buildings on Hall Street, PA28 6BU, on the harbour front. Car tests only. GOV.UK says DVSA will make arrangements for you at this test centre if you have a disability, so ring ahead and tell them what you need.

There is no railway station here and parking is not published for the site. Hall Street runs along the water and the bays there are shared with everyone using the front, so give yourself ten minutes in hand rather than counting on a space outside.

The wait has more than doubled. Learners tested in July 2026 had waited a median of 26.9 weeks against a national 11.9, and a year earlier the same figure was 12.6 — about 14.3 weeks added in twelve months. The first week with a tenth of its slots still free was 24 weeks ahead. If you are given a date, hold onto it and watch for cancellations rather than rebooking.

There is only one other centre within reach, and it is across the water: Brodick (Isle of Arran), 33.9 kilometres away, passing 67.3 per cent with a 19.1 week wait. For most people here the practical choice is to wait for Campbeltown. Booking and cancelling is on GOV.UK only.
