Seven level crossings sit in the area around this centre, which for a town of Workington's size is a lot — the railway cuts across the road network in several places and the loops work around it.
The junction work is mostly ordinary. Four named roundabouts — New Bridge Road, Calva Brow, Stainburn Road and Solway Road — with five mini-roundabouts, and each of the five practice loops on this page carries between two and eight roundabouts in nine to thirteen kilometres. Alongside those sit twenty-five give-way junctions, a high count, and it tells you where the observation marks go: plain junctions, read on your own.
The lights are sparse. Five sets of traffic signals, four signalled crossings and two zebras across fifty-five kilometres. There is one piece of traffic calming on the whole set.
The turning is dense on the shorter loops: fifteen right turns and thirteen lefts in nine and a half kilometres on one of them.
Speeds stay low. Eighty-four per cent of the distance is at 30 mph and sixteen per cent at 40, with nothing above and nothing below. There is no dual carriageway and no A-road on the loops at all.
Church Street, Viaduct, William Street, New Bridge Road, Calva Brow, Curwen Road, Ramsay Brow, Jane Street, Duke Street, Oxford Street, Washington Street and Harrington Road carry the driving, and fourteen schools sit inside the area.

Test day at Workington
Tests are being held at Allerdale House, CA14 3YJ. DVSA moved them here temporarily from Moss Bay House on the Derwent Howe Industrial Estate on 14 August 2026, so if you booked before that, check your paperwork. Car tests and motorcycle module 2 run from here, and DVSA says you can access this test centre if you use a wheelchair.
Workington station is 500 metres away.
Nothing is published about parking at the temporary site.
The wait has come down. A median of 10.9 weeks for tests taken in July 2026, against 11.9 weeks across Great Britain, and 14.7 weeks here a year earlier — nearly four weeks shorter. The first week with a tenth of its appointments still free was 18.8 weeks out.
No other test centre sits close enough to list as an alternative, which in Workington's case hardly matters: at 61.9 per cent it passes a higher share of its candidates than all but two centres in the North West.
One local pattern: men passed at 63.4 per cent and women at 60.2. Tests are booked, moved and cancelled only through GOV.UK.
