Forty-three per cent of the distance on the practice loops on this page is at 20 mph and 34 per cent at 40, with only 15 per cent at the 30 most lessons are built around. Wick is a test of changing limits and of turns: one 12.7 kilometre loop asks for 14 right turns and 14 left, and there is not one set of traffic signals anywhere across 56.7 kilometres. Two level crossings sit on the set as well. It passes 59.4 per cent, 47th of the 302 centres ranked and 10.1 points above the Scottish average, having risen 5.6 points since 2021/22. The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.

The limits change more than almost anywhere. Forty-three per cent of the distance is at 20 mph, 34 per cent at 40, 15 per cent at 30 and 8 per cent at 60. Very little of a Wick test is spent at one steady speed; you are reading signs and adjusting, and the fault examiners see most is carrying a 40 mph mindset into a 20 zone by half a street.

There are no traffic signals on the practice loops on this page at all. Twelve give-way junctions, one mini-roundabout and two signalled crossings are the whole of the junction furniture across 56.7 kilometres, so every priority decision is yours.

The turning is heavy on some loops and light on others. A 12.7 kilometre loop asks for 14 right turns and 14 left; a 7.1 kilometre loop asks for 10 and 13; but a 13.6 kilometre loop out towards Noss Head asks for seven of each in nearly twice the distance. Which one you draw changes the test quite a lot.

Two level crossings sit on the set. Stop behind the line, do not creep, and wait for the barrier rather than for the lights — worth doing once with your instructor first.

Henrietta Street, Girnigoe Street, Louisburgh Street, Glamis Road, Hillhead Road, North Road, St. Fergus Road and Murray Avenue carry most of the driving, with the A99, A882 and B874 beyond the town. There is no dual carriageway and there are 4 schools in the area.

Test day at Wick

The centre is on the Airport Industrial Estate, KW1 4QS, north of the town beside the airfield. Car tests are conducted here, along with motorcycle module 1 off-road and module 2 on-road, so the yard has more going on in it than at a car-only centre.

Wick station is 1.1 kilometres away, which is walkable, though most candidates arrive by car or with an instructor.

Parking is not published for this site. Industrial estate roads usually have room; the marked bays belong to the units, so leave a couple of minutes to walk in.

The wait was a median of 11.4 weeks for tests taken in June 2026, close to the national 11.9, and it has improved from 15.9 a year earlier. The first week with a tenth of its slots still free was 17.4 weeks ahead, so the queue is longer than the median suggests for anyone booking now.

February returned 58.6 per cent from 87 tests, which is the only month with enough tests to say much about. Thurso is 30.3 kilometres away, passes 63 per cent and was waiting 15.1 weeks — a better pass rate for a longer wait and a long drive across the county. Booking, moving and cancelling is on GOV.UK only.

This centre is not car only. DVSA publishes results for these categories separately, and they are taken by different candidates on different vehicles, so the rates are not comparable with the car figure above.
