Key facts
- Pwllheli's pass rate was 68.1% in 2025/26 from 737 tests, 18.1 points above the national average of 50.0%.
- That puts it 1 of 21 centres in Wales (Wales average 52.4%), one of the higher pass rates in the region, 15.7 points above it.
- Since 2021/22 the pass rate has risen by 4.6 points, from 63.5% to 68.1%.
- On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 12.7 weeks since booking; the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 15.4 weeks ahead.
- A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 16.6 weeks, so waits have shortened by about 3.9 weeks.
- 20% of the standard slots in the booking window were still unbooked in August 2026, which usually means a cancellation or new date is realistic here.
Pwllheli has the highest pass rate of any driving test centre in Wales, and unlike most centres its rate has gone up rather than down over the past few years. That is worth understanding rather than just enjoying. It is a small centre on the Llyn peninsula, doing a few hundred car tests a year, and the roads it tests on are quiet by the standards of a Welsh town centre: no conventional roundabouts at all within two and a half kilometres, six mini-roundabouts, two sets of lights and only two schools in that radius. What it does have is two level crossings and a rapid change from a 20 mph town to open coast road, and those are the parts that catch people out.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.
Three quarters of the tagged roads within two and a half kilometres of this centre are 20 mph, in line with the Welsh default on restricted roads, and around one in seven is at the national limit. There is very little in between. That is the shape of a Pwllheli test: a slow, watchful town section, then a lane or a coast road where sixty is the number on the sign and nowhere near the sensible speed, then back into the town again.
In the town the names are Welsh and the streets are short. Yr Ala, Stryd Moch, Lôn Dywod, Penlon Llyn and Ffordd Mela form the bulk of the residential driving, with Y Prom and Ffordd y Cob running along the water and Maes yr Orsaf near the station. There is not a single conventional roundabout in the area. Instead there are six mini-roundabouts, and those are the junctions to rehearse: exit signal, give way to the right, and no cutting across the middle when the road looks clear.
Two level crossings sit within the same radius. Approach one on a green or an open barrier and there is nothing to do beyond keeping the car moving and not stopping on the crossing itself, but a closed barrier means a proper stop, handbrake, and a calm move-off afterwards. Longer practice loops on this page run out along Morfa'r Garreg and Lôn Golff, where the surface narrows, hedges block the view into bends, and holding a steady speed is worth more than making progress for its own sake.

Test day at Pwllheli
The centre is at 33A Cardiff Road (Ffordd Caerdydd), on the main road through the town. Pwllheli station is about a kilometre away, at the end of the Cambrian line, so the train is a genuine option here in a way it is not at most rural centres. Parking for candidates is not published, and the road outside is a working town street; the usual arrangement at a centre like this is that instructors drop candidates at the door and park a little further off.
One line in the official record matters more than anything else on the page: DVSA states that you cannot access this test centre if you use a wheelchair. If that affects you, speak to DVSA before booking rather than after, because the alternative is a different centre and a longer journey.
The centre runs car tests and ADI part 3 tests. Everything else is the standard sequence: your licence is checked, you sign the insurance declaration, and the eyesight check is done outside on a parked number plate before you get in the car. From the door you are straight onto Cardiff Road in live traffic, so the first move-off is into a moving stream rather than an empty side street.
