Key facts

  • Lee On The Solent's pass rate was 63.2% in 2025/26 from 8,502 tests, 13.2 points above the national average of 50.0%.
  • That puts it 2 of 30 centres in South East (South East average 52.9%), one of the higher pass rates in the region, 10.3 points above it.
  • Since 2021/22 the pass rate has fallen by 2.4 points, from 65.6% to 63.2%.
  • On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 20 weeks since booking (longer than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 24 weeks ahead.
  • A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 23 weeks, so waits have shortened by about 3 weeks.
  • 47.3% of the standard slots in the booking window were still unbooked in August 2026, which usually means a cancellation or new date is realistic here.

Lee On The Solent has the second-highest pass rate of the thirty centres in the South East and one of the highest in the country: 63.2 per cent, thirteen points clear of the national figure. That is not a secret, which is why the wait is twenty weeks and the first genuinely open slots sit about six months out. Portsmouth is nine kilometres away with a shorter wait and a pass rate ten points lower, and that trade is the real decision for anyone booking here.

The driving is genuinely gentler than a city test. The centre is on the old airfield at Daedalus, the roads out are B-roads across the Gosport peninsula, and there is very little that is complicated in the first mile.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.

There is not a single large roundabout in the area this centre tests in. Four mini-roundabouts, seventeen sets of traffic lights, and that is the junction furniture for the whole of the peninsula end of the routes. If roundabouts are the thing you dread, this is the centre where they are least likely to decide your test.

What replaces them is turning. One of the practice loops on this page has eighteen left turns in eight and a half kilometres. The estate roads off Bayntun Drive, Spitfire Way, Cherque Way and Broom Way are laid out in blocks, and a route through them is turn, observation, turn again. Junction after junction with no roundabout to break the rhythm is its own kind of tiring, and observation faults at side roads are what the pattern produces.

Gosport Road is the spine. It appears on three of the five loops, it carries the traffic between Lee, Stubbington and Gosport, and it is where the 40 mph sections are. One in five of the roads around the centre is 40, a high share, and the change from 40 down to 30 at the edge of the built-up part is where speed faults get marked. Chark Lane, Stubbington Lane and Grove Road are the connecting roads, narrower and hedged in places. Marine Parade West runs along the seafront and can be busy in summer with parked cars and people crossing to the beach, while Milvil Road and Eric Road are the residential streets nearest the centre and the usual place for a manoeuvre.

Test day at Lee On The Solent

The centre is the Richard Sainsbury Building at Argus Gate on Daedalus Drive, on the old naval air station at Lee-on-the-Solent. The site was RNAS Lee-on-Solent, or HMS Daedalus, from 1917 until 1996, and it is now Solent Airport and an enterprise zone. The runway is still live, with search and rescue helicopters, flying schools and maintenance firms sharing the site along with a college campus and the Hovercraft Museum.

For candidates that means a wide, quiet, well signed approach and none of the kerbside scramble of a town centre unit. It also means the address is long and the site is large, so find Argus Gate specifically rather than aiming at the postcode alone.

Motorcycle module 1 is conducted here. That is the off road module, and it needs a marked manoeuvring pad, so there is a proper area of hard standing on site rather than a few bays outside a door. Car tests, motorcycle module 2 and ADI part 3 also run here.

There is no railway station in Lee-on-the-Solent; the line closed in the 1930s. Everyone arrives by road. DVSA publishes no accessibility statement for this centre, so ring ahead if you need step free access.
