Key facts
- Isles of Scilly's pass rate was 75% in 2025/26 from 8 tests, 25 points above the national average of 50.0%.
- On waiting times, the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 24 weeks ahead.
Eight tests were taken on Scilly in 2025/26 and 75 per cent of them were passed. That is 25 points above the national average and 23 above the South West's 51.7, and with eight tests behind it the figure means very little — one candidate either way swings it further than most centres move in a decade. The driving is unlike anywhere else. Every metre of the practice loops on this page is at 30 mph, across 42.8 kilometres on St Mary's, and in the whole area there is one zebra crossing, no give-way junctions, no traffic signals and no roundabouts. The last waiting time DVSA published for the island dates from August 2023, so check the booking system rather than any figure.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.
One hundred per cent of the distance is at 30 mph. There is no faster stretch and no slower one anywhere on the five loops, so nothing here asks you to build speed on an open road and nothing drops you into a 20 zone. What is left is the road itself: lanes on St Mary's are narrow, hedged and walled, they bend continuously, and the passing places matter more than the markings.
The A3110, A3111 and A3112 carry the driving, and they are A-roads in name only — the same width and character as the lanes around them. Reading how much room you actually have, and holding a position that leaves you somewhere to go when something comes the other way, is the whole skill.
There is nothing else to manage. Across 42.8 kilometres there is not one give-way junction, not one set of traffic signals, no roundabouts, no mini-roundabouts, no signalled crossings, no traffic calming and no level crossings. One zebra crossing, in Hugh Town, and 2 schools in the area.
The turning is light. A 5.3 kilometre loop asks for six right turns and six left, the busiest on the set. The longest, at 13.9 kilometres, asks for three of each.
Hugh Street, Church Street, Garrison Lane, Garrison Hill, The Garrison, Old Town Road, Old Town Lane, Old Lane, Porthloo Lane, Parting Carn Lane, Telegraph Road and Pump Road carry the driving, with King Edward's Road named on one loop. There is no dual carriageway.

Test day at Isles of Scilly
Tests are conducted from the Town Hall on St Mary's, TR21 0LW, in the middle of Hugh Town. Car tests only. GOV.UK does not publish a wheelchair access note for this site, so ring DVSA and ask if you need to know before booking.
There is no railway and no parking is published for the centre. Hugh Town is small and its streets are narrow, so leave the car where it will not block a delivery and walk the last part — it will not be far.
The waiting figures here are thin. The last median DVSA published was 21.7 weeks, and that was for tests taken in August 2023, so it describes a different year rather than the one you are booking into. No current median is published, which is what happens at a centre running a handful of tests. Look at what the booking system actually offers, and look more than once.
There is no other centre within reach: everything else means a flight or a sailing to the mainland and a drive at the far end. That makes whatever date you are given worth keeping, and it makes booking well before you feel ready the sensible move — you can always use the extra weeks. Booking, moving and cancelling is on GOV.UK only.
