Key facts

  • Isle of Mull's pass rate was 73.8% in 2025/26 from 42 tests, 23.8 points above the national average of 50.0%.
  • On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 21.6 weeks since booking (longer than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 9.6 weeks ahead.
  • A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 6.4 weeks, so waits have grown by about 15.2 weeks.
  • 75% of the standard slots in the booking window were still unbooked in August 2026, which usually means a cancellation or new date is realistic here.

Every metre of the practice loops on this page is at 30 mph. Not most of it — all of it, across 47.7 kilometres, which is something no other test area in Britain can say. Mull passed 73.8 per cent of candidates in 2025/26 from 42 tests, 23.8 points above the national average of 50, though that is far too few tests for a national ranking. Three give-way junctions, no traffic signals, no roundabouts and one school in the whole area. The waiting figures are worth a second look: the median was 21.6 weeks, up from 8.4 a year earlier, but the first week with slots still free was only 4.5 weeks out.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.

One hundred per cent of the distance is at 30 mph. There is no faster section and no slower one, across all five loops and 47.7 kilometres. That single figure tells you most of what the test here is like: no stretch where you are asked to build speed, no zone where you have to drop to 20, and nothing to catch you out on a limit change, because there are no limit changes.

What replaces that is the road itself. The A848, A849, B8035 and B8073 carry the driving, and they run along the shore and over the hills with bends that arrive one after another, gradients in both directions and sightlines that close without much warning. Steering that stays smooth through a long bend, and a speed chosen for what you can see rather than for the sign, is what gets marked.

There is almost no road furniture. Three give-way junctions in the whole set, no traffic signals, no roundabouts, no mini-roundabouts, no zebra or signalled crossings, no traffic calming and no level crossings. One school in the area.

The turning is the lightest of any centre. An 11.5 kilometre loop asks for four right turns and six left. A 7.9 kilometre loop asks for three and two. Nothing on the set asks for more than six of either. Ardmor Road and Jarvisfield Road are the only named streets, and two of the five loops are named after neither — they are simply road, from the start to the finish.

Test day at Isle of Mull

The centre is at the Post Office in Salen, PA72 6JD, roughly halfway up the island rather than at either ferry port, so allow for the drive across whichever way you arrive. Car tests only. GOV.UK does not publish a wheelchair access note for this site, so ring DVSA and ask if you need to know before booking.

There is no railway station on the island and no parking is published for the centre. Salen is a small village on the shore road; leave the car well clear of the post office frontage and of passing places, and walk the last part.

The two waiting figures disagree sharply, and the second is the one to act on. Learners tested in July 2026 had waited a median of 21.6 weeks, up from 8.4 a year earlier. But the first week with a tenth of its slots still free was only 4.5 weeks ahead — sooner than almost anywhere in Scotland. Look at the diary yourself before you assume the median applies to you.

Oban is the only other centre within reach and it means a ferry: 31.2 kilometres away, passing 66.1 per cent with a 15.4 week wait. Both the pass rate and the diary favour staying here. Booking and cancelling is on GOV.UK only.
