Key facts
- Inverness's pass rate was 45.8% in 2025/26 from 3,252 tests, 4.2 points below the national average of 50.0%.
- That puts it 59 of 67 centres in Scotland (Scotland average 49.3%), one of the lower pass rates in the region, 3.5 points below it.
- Since 2021/22 the pass rate has fallen by 3 points, from 48.8% to 45.8%.
- On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 5.9 weeks since booking (shorter than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 20.4 weeks ahead.
- 20.9% of the standard slots in the booking window were still unbooked in August 2026, which usually means a cancellation or new date is realistic here.
Inverness is a 20 mph test. Of the roads tagged within two and a half kilometres of the centre, 83 per cent are 20 and only 12 per cent are 30, a share you will not find at many centres anywhere in Britain. Scotland has not made 20 the default limit, so these are streets signed one by one, and the effect on the drive is constant: long stretches at a speed most candidates find harder to hold steady than 30. The centre is on Longman Drive, on the industrial side of the city near the harbour, and the loops work through the streets around Henderson Drive and Shore Street. The pass rate is below the Scottish average. The wait is one of the shortest in the country.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.
Holding 20 mph is the skill this centre tests hardest. With 83 per cent of the roads in the area signed at 20, most of a test here is spent at that speed, and it is an awkward one. Too slow and it reads as undue hesitation, particularly on a clear road with nothing ahead. A few miles per hour over and it is a speed fault. In a car geared for 30, second gear is usually the answer, and the transitions in and out of it need to be quiet.
Around that, the driving is roundabouts. Within the same radius there are conventional roundabouts at Longman, Telford Street, Harbour Road and Millburn among others, plus 14 mini-roundabouts and 33 signal-controlled junctions. Those counts describe the area rather than one route. The loops themselves carry four to nine roundabouts each across seven to fourteen kilometres, so the shortest of them is almost all junction work.
Four level crossings sit inside the same area, more than at most centres. If one comes up, approach at a speed that lets you stop and never move on to the crossing without a clear exit beyond it.
Harbour Road, Stadium Road and Shore Street carry the busier driving near the centre, and Telford Street and Kenneth Street carry more of it further out. There are 14 schools in the area, and the residential streets used for manoeuvres are quiet outside the school run and considerably less so during it.

Test day at Inverness
The centre is at 4 Longman Drive, in the industrial area near the harbour. It is a unit on an estate road, not a building on a main street.
GOV.UK is explicit about access here: you cannot access this test centre if you use a wheelchair. If that affects you, ring DVSA before booking and ask which nearby centre they can arrange instead, rather than turning up and finding out.
The tests offered are car, motorcycle module 1 off-road and motorcycle module 2 on-road. There is no ADI testing here. Motorcycle candidates share the site, so keep clear of the manoeuvring area when you arrive.
Parking is not published. Estate units of this kind usually have bays outside and space on the estate roads, which is typical rather than confirmed. Allow a few minutes rather than counting on a space at the door.
Inverness station is a little over a kilometre away, walkable in around fifteen minutes, though most candidates arrive with an instructor. Tests are booked, moved and cancelled through GOV.UK only.
The examiner checks your licence, asks you to sign the declaration that the car is insured, and does the eyesight check outside before you get in.
