Key facts

  • Hawick's pass rate was 64.3% in 2025/26 from 415 tests, 14.3 points above the national average of 50.0%.
  • That puts it 18 of 67 centres in Scotland (Scotland average 49.3%), one of the higher pass rates in the region, 15 points above it.
  • Since 2021/22 the pass rate has fallen by 10.7 points, from 75% to 64.3%.
  • On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 24.9 weeks since booking (longer than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 17 weeks ahead.
  • A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 20.4 weeks, so waits have grown by about 4.5 weeks.
  • 75% of the standard slots in the booking window were still unbooked in August 2026, which usually means a cancellation or new date is realistic here.

Hawick passes 64.3 per cent, 24th of the 302 centres ranked and 15 points above the Scottish average, though it has come down 10.7 points since 2021/22. The wait has almost doubled in a year, from 13.4 weeks to 24.9 — and yet 24.5 per cent of the slots in the booking window were still unbooked, so keep looking rather than accepting what you are first shown. Sixty per cent of the distance on the practice loops on this page is at 60 mph and 30 per cent at 20, with only 6 per cent at 30. One set of traffic signals and one roundabout serve the whole of 53.6 kilometres; everything else is yours to judge.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.

Sixty per cent of the distance is at 60 mph. Another 30 per cent is at 20, and only 6 per cent at 30. There is no middle to a Hawick test: you are either on Border road at national limit, with bends, dips and farm entrances, or crawling through the estates at 20. The transition between them, in both directions, is where the marks go — carrying town caution out onto the open road, or arriving at the 20 sign still doing 35.

The junction furniture is almost nothing. One roundabout on the whole set, at Wilton Hill. One set of traffic signals. Two signalled crossings, one zebra, no mini-roundabouts, and nineteen give-way junctions across 53.6 kilometres. Three of the five practice loops on this page have no roundabout on them at all.

What they do have is turns. An 8.9 kilometre loop asks for fifteen right turns and ten left; a 10.6 kilometre loop for eleven and eight. On a 20 mph estate road with parked cars, each of those is a hold-and-look rather than a swing.

Burnfoot Road, Appletreehall Road, Queen's Drive, Henderson Road, Galalaw Road, Eildon Road, Burns Road, Stirches Road and Hamilton Road carry the driving, with Hornshole Bridge and Wilton Hill on the outer stretches. No A-road appears on the loops, there is no dual carriageway, and there are no level crossings. Four pieces of traffic calming and 6 schools sit in the area.

Test day at Hawick

The centre is at the Burnfoot Community Hub on Burnfoot Road, TD9 8EJ, up on the Burnfoot estate rather than in the middle of Hawick. It is a community building with its own users, and does not look like a test centre from the road.

Car tests are conducted here, along with ADI part 3. DVSA will make arrangements for you at this test centre if you have a disability — tell them when you book.

No station is close enough to matter, so everyone arrives by car or with an instructor. Parking is not published; on a community hub the bays belong to the building, so leave the car on a nearby street and walk in.

The wait was a median of 24.9 weeks for tests taken in July 2026, more than double the national 11.9, and it has grown by about eleven and a half weeks in a year. But the first week with a tenth of its slots still free was 14.5 weeks ahead, and 24.5 per cent of standard slots were unbooked — the queue is not as solid as the median makes it look, so check for a cancellation.

The monthly figures rest on about forty tests each: May returned 73.9 per cent and October 53.7. Galashiels is 19.7 kilometres away and was waiting 7.4 weeks, but passes 47.4 per cent. Booking and cancelling is on GOV.UK only.

What examiners mark most often

DVSA does not publish faults by centre, but it does publish them nationally. These collected the most marks across every car test in Great Britain in 2025/26, and they are the same ones you will be marked on at Hawick.
