Key facts

  • Gairloch's pass rate was 73.5% in 2025/26 from 49 tests, 23.5 points above the national average of 50.0%.
  • On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 6.3 weeks since booking (shorter than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 19.8 weeks ahead.

Gairloch passed 73.5 per cent of candidates in 2025/26, 23.5 points above the national average of 50, and the median wait was 6.3 weeks against a national 11.9. Both figures come from a very small centre — 49 tests in the year, too few for a national ranking — so read them as an encouraging picture rather than a guarantee. The drive is slow and technical. Forty-six per cent of the distance on the practice loops on this page is at 20 mph, 24 per cent at 40 and 23 per cent at 60, with six give-way junctions, no traffic signals and no roundabouts of any kind across 43.6 kilometres. You judge every priority yourself.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.

Almost half the distance is at 20 mph. Another 24 per cent is at 40, 23 per cent at 60 and 8 per cent at 30, so the limit changes constantly and rarely stays put for long. Settling to each new limit before the sign rather than after it is the single most useful thing to practise, and holding 20 on a downhill run without drifting up is where marks quietly go.

There is nothing to sequence the junctions for you. Six give-way junctions and one zebra crossing across 43.6 kilometres, and that is the lot — no traffic signals, no roundabouts named anywhere, no mini-roundabouts, no traffic calming and no level crossings. Every priority is yours to judge from what you can see, on approaches where a bank, a wall or a bend shortens the view.

Single-track sections come with the territory here, and although they are not counted as junctions they behave like them: you are choosing a passing place, judging closing speed and deciding who gives way, often on a gradient.

The turning is even and unhurried. A 10.4 kilometre loop asks for eight right turns and seven left, an 8.7 kilometre loop asks for six and four, and the rest sit at five or six of each. The loops are long because so much of the length runs between junctions rather than through them.

Mihol Road, Strath, Shore Street, School Brae, Lonemore Road and Fasaich carry most of the driving. There are 2 schools in the area and no dual carriageway.

Test day at Gairloch

The centre is on Mihol Road, IV21 2BX. Car tests only. GOV.UK does not publish a wheelchair access note for this site, so ring DVSA and ask before booking if that matters to you.

There is no railway station anywhere near, and parking is not published for the centre. Mihol Road is a village street, so leave the car well clear of driveways and passing places and walk the last part.

The two waiting figures disagree, and it is worth understanding why. Learners tested in July 2026 had waited a median of 6.3 weeks, one of the shortest medians in Scotland and well under the national 11.9. But the first week with a tenth of its slots still free was 24 weeks ahead. The median describes people who already had a booking; the diary in front of you now is much fuller. Both things are true, so take an early date if the system offers you one and do not assume the short median will apply to you.

Ullapool is the only centre within reach, 36.8 kilometres away as the crow flies and a good deal further by road around the coast, passing 61.2 per cent with an 8.4 week wait. On the pass rate you are better off here. Booking and cancelling is on GOV.UK only.
