Key facts
- Bodmin's pass rate was 47.5% in 2025/26 from 6,392 tests, 2.5 points below the national average of 50.0%.
- That puts it 15 of 21 centres in South West (South West average 51.7%), one of the lower pass rates in the region, 4.2 points below it.
- Since 2021/22 the pass rate has risen by 8 points, from 39.5% to 47.5%.
- On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 3.6 weeks since booking (shorter than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 11 weeks ahead.
- A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 7.7 weeks, so waits have shortened by about 4.1 weeks.
There is not one set of traffic lights on the practice loops on this page. Bodmin's test is roundabouts, give ways and open road: about a third of the route length at 50 mph, another quarter at national speed limit, and the A38 and A389 supplying the fast part of it, including a stretch of dual carriageway. Junction work here means judging a gap on a road where traffic is already doing fifty, which is a different skill from waiting at a red. The town half is narrow and parked up, with Priory Road, Castle Canyke Road and St Nicholas Street doing most of it. The pass rate is below the national average, though it has climbed a long way since 2021, and the wait is shorter than at either of the centres near it.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.
Speed is what this test is about. Roughly a third of the route length on the practice loops on this page is at 50 mph and another quarter is national speed limit, with only a small share in 20 mph zones. The A38 and A389 carry that part, and there is dual carriageway on the loops, so lane discipline, slip roads and matching the speed of traffic already moving are all in play. Lostwithiel Road, Normandy Way and Carminow Road are the roads that link the town to it.
With no traffic lights at all on the loops, every junction is a judgement rather than an instruction. Six named roundabouts and one mini-roundabout carry that work, at Lostwithiel Road, Priory Road, Carminow Road, Launceston Road, Turfdown Road and Gilbert Road, and a roundabout on a fast road is entered on what you can see. Look early, keep rolling if the gap is there, and do not stop dead at an open give way.
The town half is the opposite problem. Castle Canyke Road, Beacon Road, Harleigh Road and the streets around St Nicholas Street are narrow and parked on both sides in places, so meeting traffic, clutch control and knowing when to hold back matter more here than on the fast roads. There is a level crossing on the loops as well.
Manoeuvres are usually set on the quieter residential roads off Beatrice Road and Halgavor Road, where the kerb line is straight and there is parking on one side to work against.

Test day at Bodmin
Three instructions from DVSA change what you do at Bodmin. Use only the bays marked Candidates Parking Only, directly outside the test centre. Do not come onto the site at all unless you have a test booked, which rules out a look round the week before. And arrive no more than five minutes before your test time, so the usual advice about turning up early does not apply here.
The address is a mouthful: units 32 to 36 at the Walker Lines offices on Beatrice Road, on the industrial ground south of the town. Give yourself time to work out where you are going, but spend that time before you drive onto the site rather than after.
DVSA publishes that you can access this centre if you use a wheelchair. Car tests and motorcycle module 2 are the test types offered, so there are no ADI tests here and no module 1.
Bodmin General station is about a kilometre away, though most candidates arrive with an instructor. The examiner will check your licence, take the signed insurance declaration and do the eyesight check outside before you get in. Booking, moving and cancelling a test are done through GOV.UK.
