One set of traffic signals in 48 kilometres. Berwick is a give-way town: 30 give-way junctions on the practice loops on this page, seven mini-roundabouts and four named roundabouts, and almost nothing that tells you when to move. It passes 53.9 per cent, 111th of the 302 centres ranked and second of the 11 centres in the North East. Two-thirds of the distance is at 30 mph, 15 per cent at 20 through the old town and 18 per cent at 60 on the roads out. Before you travel, check your confirmation: the centre moved to the Berwick Sports and Leisure Centre on Northumberland Road in September 2025, and older listings still point at Tweedmouth.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.
There is one set of traffic signals on the whole set. Everything else you meet, you decide for yourself: 30 give-way junctions across 48 kilometres, seven mini-roundabouts, and four named roundabouts on Rotary Way, Ord Drive, Northumberland Road and Cornhill Road. An 11.4 kilometre loop carries no roundabout at all and asks for ten right turns and ten left. If you have learned to pace yourself off green lights, none of that helps here.
The mini-roundabouts deserve a lesson of their own, because seven is a lot for a town this size and they sit at junctions where the approach is narrow. Give way to the right, and go round the middle rather than over it.
The old town is where the 20 mph sits — 15 per cent of the distance, on Marygate, Hide Hill, Silver Street and Ravensdowne, streets that are narrow, one-way in places and busy with people stepping out. Sixty-six per cent is at 30 and 18 per cent at 60 on Etal Road and Cornhill Road heading inland, with a short stretch of dual carriageway on the set.
Ord Drive, Rotary Way, Prince Edward Road, West Street, Etal Road, Cemetery Lane and Dock Road carry most of the driving, with the A698 and A1167. Four signalled crossings, one level crossing and 11 schools sit in the area, and there is one piece of traffic calming on the whole set.

Test day at Berwick-On-Tweed
Get the address right first. DVSA moved this centre to the Berwick Sports and Leisure Centre on Northumberland Road, TD15 2AS, from 24 September 2025. The old listing is the Tweedmouth Industrial Estate on Northumberland Street, which is the other side of the river — an easy and expensive mistake on the morning. Take the address from your booking confirmation.
The new site is open from 9am until 3pm each day, with car tests starting at around 9.07am and vocational tests at 9am. Car tests, motorcycle module 2 on-road, lorry and bus, and ADI part 3 are all conducted here. DVSA will make arrangements for you at this test centre if you have a disability.
Berwick-upon-Tweed station is 1.3 kilometres away, so arriving by train is realistic if your instructor meets you.
Parking is not published. A leisure centre car park has its own users and often a time limit; check the signs rather than assuming, and allow for a test that overruns.
The wait was a median of 20.3 weeks for tests taken in July 2026, against a national 11.9, up from 15.1 a year earlier. The first week with a tenth of its slots still free was 15.8 weeks ahead. Duns passes 70.2 per cent but was waiting 22.4 weeks. Booking and cancelling is on GOV.UK only.
