Key facts

  • Alnwick's pass rate was 55.5% in 2025/26 from 1,282 tests, 5.5 points above the national average of 50.0%.
  • That puts it 1 of 11 centres in North East (North East average 48.4%), one of the higher pass rates in the region, 7.1 points above it.
  • Since 2021/22 the pass rate has fallen by 9.6 points, from 65.1% to 55.5%.
  • Male candidates passed at 53.6% and female candidates at 58.1%, a gap of 4.5 points.
  • On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 14.7 weeks since booking (longer than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 20 weeks ahead.
  • 27.8% of the standard slots in the booking window were still unbooked in August 2026, which usually means a cancellation or new date is realistic here.

One set of traffic lights sits on the whole set of practice loops at Alnwick. Everything else you meet is a give-way line, a roundabout or a pedestrian crossing, and there are 25 give-way junctions to get through. That is what a market town test looks like. The other half of it is speed. About a fifth of the loop length is at national speed limit, so a route that starts on Clayport Street at 30 mph can be out on an open road within a few minutes. Alnwick has the best pass rate of the eleven centres in the North East, though the figure has been falling for several years rather than holding steady.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.

Two thirds of the loop length is 30 mph, a seventh is 20, and the remaining fifth is national speed limit. That last fifth is what separates Alnwick from a purely urban test. You go from Clayport Street and Bondgate Without, where the limit is 30 and people cross wherever they like, to open road on the B6341 or the B6346 within a couple of minutes, and the examiner is then watching whether you build to a speed that suits the road rather than crawling along at the one you left town with.

Junction work is almost all unsignalled. There are 25 give-way junctions on the loops and exactly one set of traffic lights. Six roundabout locations are named, at Willowburn Avenue, Taylor Drive, St James Estate, Weavers Way, Bondgate Without and South Road, and none of them is a mini-roundabout, so approach speeds are higher than at a town built around painted circles.

The loops range from 6.3 km up to 13.5 km. The shortest stays in the town around Clayport Street and has no roundabout on it at all. The longest goes out through Canongate. The 12.8 km loop along Taylor Drive is the one that mixes both halves of the test, three roundabouts and a run at the national limit in the same circuit.

Three level crossings sit on the loops. Five zebra crossings and six signalled crossings cover the town centre, and with only three traffic calming features you cannot rely on a hump to slow you into them.

Test day at Alnwick

The centre is in Roxburgh House on Green Batt, a short walk from the middle of Alnwick. Green Batt is a town-centre street, so parking depends on what is free when you arrive. Nothing is published about candidate parking here, which is normal, and the sensible plan is the one most instructors use anyway: drop at the door, park elsewhere, walk back.

DVSA runs car tests here and nothing else. No motorcycle module 2, no ADI part 3. The record does say DVSA will make arrangements for candidates with a disability at this centre, which in practice means ringing ahead rather than raising it on the morning.

The nearest station in our data is Lionheart, about a mile and a half from the centre, so nearly everyone arrives by car.

Waits at Alnwick run longer than the national median and have grown over the past year. A test taken in July had been booked about fourteen and a half weeks earlier, and the first week with a real choice of slots was further out than that again. Book early and keep watching for cancellations. Booking, moving and cancelling is only through GOV.UK.

What examiners mark most often

DVSA does not publish faults by centre, but it does publish them nationally. These collected the most marks across every car test in Great Britain in 2025/26, and they are the same ones you will be marked on at Alnwick.
