Rush hour driving practice in Birmingham
Birmingham rush hour is long queues on radial roads, buses everywhere and busy suburban high streets. The PassRank app has a busy-traffic drive through the streets around the Kings Heath driving test centre, so you can practise queuing, junctions, parked-car gaps and crossings in dense traffic.

What rush hour driving is like in Birmingham
Kings Heath is a suburban high street south of the city centre: shops, parked cars on both sides, frequent bus stops and people crossing. In rush hour the skill is patience, giving way sensibly and not blocking side roads.
The city is known for its multi-lane ring-road junctions and underpasses. This drive stays on suburban roads, so use it to rehearse queuing, lane choice and observation rather than the ring road itself.
Rules that matter in Birmingham
Bus lanes
Read the sign at the start of the lane: it gives the days and hours. Outside those hours you can use it. Do not enter a lane that is in operation to avoid a queue.
Parked cars and narrow gaps
If parked cars are on your side, give way to oncoming traffic. Stop before the obstruction with room to move off, and do not squeeze through a gap you cannot clear.
Mini roundabouts
Approach slowly, give way to traffic from the right, and signal for the exit you take. Do not drive over the middle unless it is too tight to go round.
Do not block junctions or crossings
Only move forward when there is space for you on the far side. The app marks stopping on a crossing or in a junction in a queue.

How to practise it in the app
- Open the app and go to the Drive tab, then choose Rush hour.
- Pick Birmingham: Kings Heath.
- Drive in dense traffic: queue at the lights, wait for gaps, keep crossings and junctions clear.
- Get marked on signals, junctions, speed and lane position, plus stopping on a crossing or in a junction in a queue. Replay and change one thing.
Tips for the drive
- Use the drive to practise leaving a gap at side roads so traffic can turn out, even when you have right of way.
- Check your mirrors every time the queue moves, not only when you pull away.
- Try the drive again and focus only on signals: every lane change, every pull-away, every turn.
Questions
- Does it cover the Birmingham ring road?
- No. The drive uses the suburban streets around the Kings Heath test centre. Use it for queuing, junction and crossing practice.
- Is the traffic realistic?
- It is built to be dense and to behave like a queue: vehicles stop, wait and pull out. It is practice for the habits busy traffic asks for, not a recording of a real day.
- Is the rush hour practice free?
- The app is free to download. Full access, including rush hour drives, is an in-app purchase on the App Store and Google Play, with a 3-day free trial in the stores. There is no free trial on the website.
