Drive any route, on real streets
Drive the roads you'll actually drive
Mock test routes are great for test day, but most of your driving happens somewhere else: the school run, the way to work, the big roundabout near the supermarket that you'd rather avoid. Free drive lets you practise any of them. Type a start and a destination, or tap the location button to start from where you are, and the route is drawn on a 3D map of the real streets.
Press Drive it and the simulator builds the drive around that route: the road layout within a few hundred metres either side, the buildings, give way and stop lines, traffic lights, zebra crossings, speed bumps and the speed limit on each street. Signal for every turn, take the right exit at each roundabout and keep to the limit, and you're marked like a driving test at the end. Press Watch it to sit back and see the route driven for you first.
Practise the drive to your test centre
Start from home and pick your test centre from the suggestions, and you get the drive you'll do on the morning of your test, in time to learn the lanes. For the routes examiners use after you set off, see the mock test routes on your test centre's page. To work on a single skill, there are the manoeuvre and roundabout simulators.
Questions
- Can I practise driving my own route before a lesson or test?
- Yes. Pick any start and destination, such as your street and the test centre, and the simulator builds that drive from real map data: the same junctions, roundabouts and turns, in the order you'll meet them.
- Where does the road data come from?
- Routes come from OpenStreetMap through the OSRM route planner, and the street layout, signs, traffic lights, crossings and speed limits come from OpenStreetMap too. It's the same data that many sat navs use, mapped by volunteers, so a sign or limit that hasn't been mapped yet won't appear.
- How long can a route be?
- Up to 15 km (about 9 miles). Driving test routes are usually 30 to 40 minutes including the independent driving section, so that covers a full test-length drive.
- Does free drive work outside the UK?
- It works in the UK and Ireland, the USA, Canada and Australia, and in Malta, Cyprus, the UAE, Turkey, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands and Poland. The simulator switches to driving on the right, km/h or mph to match the local rule.
- Is it free?
- Planning a route and the flyover are free for everyone. Driving the route in the simulator is part of the PassRank simulator subscription, along with every mock test route, manoeuvre and roundabout.
