What you need to know
Road signs use shape and colour to tell you what to expect before you can read them. Red signals a stop or a prohibition, yellow warns of a hazard ahead, orange marks construction and temporary conditions, green gives directions, and white with black or red is regulatory. A stop sign is an octagon, a yield sign is a downward triangle, and a railway crossing warning is a round yellow sign.
Regulatory signs tell you what you must do, such as speed limits, no parking and no turns. Warning signs tell you to slow down and watch for a curve, a hill, a crossing or slippery conditions. Information signs point you to services and destinations. If a sign and a police officer or flagger disagree, follow the officer or flagger.
Pavement markings work together with signs. A solid yellow line on your side means do not pass. A broken yellow line lets you pass when it is safe. Yellow lines separate traffic travelling in opposite directions and white lines separate traffic travelling the same way. Stop lines and crosswalk lines show where to stop, and diamond symbols mark lanes reserved for certain vehicles.
