What you need to know

Right of way is about taking turns safely. At a four-way stop, the vehicle that arrives first goes first. If two vehicles arrive together, the one on the right goes first. At an intersection with no signs or signals, yield to a vehicle already in the intersection, and to the vehicle on your right if you arrive together. A yield sign means slow down and give way to traffic, stopping if needed.

When you turn left, yield to oncoming vehicles and to pedestrians crossing. Signal, check your blind spot and turn into the lane closest to the centre line. When you turn right, stay close to the right edge, yield to cyclists beside you and turn into the nearest lane on the new road. Always stop behind the stop line or before the crosswalk.

Roundabouts keep traffic flowing in a counterclockwise circle. Slow down on approach, yield to vehicles already in the circle and to pedestrians at the crosswalks, then enter when there is a safe gap. Do not stop in the circle, and signal when you leave. In a multi-lane roundabout, choose your lane before entering and do not change lanes inside.
